Why do I need Drake Lapthorn?

In the UK there are very clear guidelines around the requirement of the completion of Legionella Risk Assessments laid out in the Government’s “Approved Code of Practice and guidance Legionnaires’ disease: The control of legionella bacteria in water systems L8”. It applies to any work activity, premises controlled in connection with a trade, business or any other undertaking where water is used or stored. If you own and have responsibility for such a premises or work activity you have a statutory duty to assess and act on any risk present.

Systems that have a reasonable foreseeable risk of exposure to legionella bacteria should be risk assessed. The risk assessment may identify on a simple system that the current controls in place are sufficient to control the risk, however a more complex system may require further action to minimise risk of exposure.

Once completed the risk assessment and written scheme should enable management of the water system by your company to minimise the risk of an outbreak occurring at your premises.  Planning and management systems should be robust enough to ensure that water systems are maintained in a satisfactory condition.

The guidelines also state that all legionella risk assessments should be completed by a person who can actively demonstrate competency in this area.
